Tricks of the Trade
American Girl dolls have a pretty limited range of motion, but I kind of enjoy the challenge of finding interesting and realistic looking poses. For illustration purposes, here are some unedited photos that show some things I do to give the illusion of more flexibility. To help the dolls bend over, I often use a short stick poked under the clothes to act as a third "leg" or tripod. If any part of it is visible in photos I remove it in post processing.

I use clear hair elastics to help them hold objects, such as this example with the basket. And again any visible bits are removed. I always say editing is 80% of a photographer's work.

Head tilts are easy. Just loosen the neck strings and tilt the head any way you want! Higher necklines help hide the neck joint. Do this at your own risk though - your doll's head may fall off!
