Scarlett's Blue and White Walking Suit
By Sata & Haykush Designs
Scarlett wears this outfit when she visits Ashley Wilkes at the timber yard. This outfit is part of the 1860's-1870's fashion timeline, also known as the Reconstruction era. Victorian reconstruction era fashion (roughly 1865-1875) marked a transition from wide, dome-shaped crinolines to bustles, characterized by the "polonaise" style, where overskirts were looped up, and there was a shift toward back-focused volume. Key features included rich fabrics, vibrant colors, and high-waisted, heavily decorated silhouettes. The fashion of the post-Civil War Reconstruction era highlighted a return to high-fashion experimentation following the war-time constraints, heavily favoring ornate decorations and a structured, tailored look.

The blue and white walking suit consists of crisp white two-piece bustle dress made from high quality charmeuse fabric and lake-blue velvet bolero jacket. The two-piece white bustle outfit is made using my own pattern and the jacket is constructed using the "Marianne" pattern by Pemberley Threads as a base.

The two-piece white outfit consists of an elegant, fitted top with low neckline and lace trimmed sleeves. It is fully lined with white cotton fabric and has pearl buttons in the back for closure. The skirt features a flatter front with an apron detail, a train in the back, and a bustle trimmed with embroidered lace. The apron is trimmed with a white delicate lace. The skirt is fully lined, and it closes on the sides with snaps. I also added a decorative lacing detail in the back.

The velvet bolero is made of high-quality velvet. The color is so radiant. It is fully lined with blue batiste fabric. It features fitted sleeves, decorative shoulder details, collar, and a white shawl that snaps to it on the inside. I added a small bustle to the back as well.

For this outfit I made a white hat. I used the "1876 Walking Suit Hat" pattern by Ann Van Doren Designs. The hat brim has a hidden wire, which allows you to manipulate the shape. I bent it into a triangle form in the front to match the shape of the hat that Scarlett was wearing. I added tulle ties, that tie on the side into a bow matching closely the inspiration picture. The hat is made from white taffeta. It is decorated with a corded lace and a white flower made from the same fabric as the shawl.

I also utilized Michelle's tutorial on how to make a fancy umbrella out of cheap doll sized umbrellas that open and close. I used a beautiful, embroidered lace for this project.

The bustle outfit requires a bustle pad. I used a pattern by Pemberley Threads to make one from cotton-blend fabric. Instead of ties, I used a full waistband and hook and eye closure.

I paired this outfit with the Victorian Button Boots in White by Bbeauty Dolls.

For the undergarments, I made a corset and pantaloon duo from silk fabric using MHD's design pattern. The corset is fully lined. I added a stay-in stabilizer layer in between to make it stiffer-for a proper corset shape/function.

The corset has a beautiful lacing detail in the back with blue satin ribbon. I also used an embroidery detail with blue accent color on both the corset and pantaloons. Pantaloons have an enclosed elastic waist and feature pleated trim on the bottom.

I paired this outfit with a sapphire heart necklace set that includes: a necklace, earring drops, and a bracelet. This set is currently available in my Etsy shop here. Note that the bracelet was used to keep the umbrella closed, so it has a dual function for this outfit.
