Sasha dolls are named after their designer, Sasha Morgenthaler, the world famous Swiss doll maker. She designed dolls with a dream in her mind - a vision of how a child would look and move in the age of innocence. Her dolls were originally individually made in wood and later produced in series where they were done in full vinyl bodies for children's play.
Sasha dolls natural movements, their soft hair and wistful looks bring special enjoyment - they are also "real". They can be washed and clothes can be changed. Children love them and are a favorite of collectors.
This doll was produced by the Trendon Ltd Company in Cheshire England where the dolls were unmarked. Later on they were produced by the Gotz Company in Germany where back stamps and/head stamps were applied to identify the time period when they were manufactured.
Sasha:
Sasha has been restrung as her vintage cording had gone bad and was causing her head and limbs to almost come off. She is now tight and able to pose properly. Her hair is about elbow length and is a mix of light blondes with some golden blonde blended in. She has a high bang and her hair is all layered with parts flipping up. She is in played with condition, but remarkably there are no imperfections on her body or marks. Her original outfit was not there when we received her, nor any paperwork or box, so I had to study and research a long time to find out exactly what year she was. Here were my findings based on that research:
- She has the pin dot iris in her eyes
- Her make-up is very pastel, not bright like later models, with darker shadows on her eyes. Later versions had very bright eyeshadow and defined darker lining.
- Her lip color is consistent with dolls from the 1960's era in an almost pepto-bismal pink
- She has no body markings making her pre-Gotz manufacturing
- She is still vinyl so she is not part of the earliest handmade models by Sasha as those were wood
- She measures exactly 16" high which is consistent with 1960's molds, later models from 1970-1980 were 17"
Sasha has been given a be-spoke custom outfit - a peacoat dress with hand embroidered flowers on a burnt orange/rust orange wool. It has lace details in off-white on the cuffs and collars. Diamond print knee-high socks in off-white, and off-white almost taupe dress flats. Since Sasha came to us with no clothes, we wanted to give her something special to wear for her new owner consistent with the fashion of the era and elevated. The coat/dress is fully lined in off-white lining and snaps at the front. Sasha is wearing bloomers underneath in white. We've given her a wooden stand to stay true to her design and era.
Gregor has a rather 1960's mod chop hair style. He comes with his original blue sweater and a handmade pair of faux dark brown leather pants that match his original faux brown leather shoes. He has a matching stand to Sasha's. His sweater does have several holes. Gregor has a pink highlighter mark on one wrist (his sweater covers it), but is in otherwise excellent condition. Gregor has also been restrung due to age. He has been cleaned throughout.
