As a lover of 50’s fashion, this was one of my favorite dolls to restore as most of the Cissy's I have worked on recently have been the similar blonde style hair. "The Supper Club" is an ode to that very specific era and destination where we would expect this doll would be going if she was alive.
Her face molds when standing next to my blonde Cissy's has more characteristics of Binnie or Winnie which gave her a unique distinction. This was common as Madame Alexander had those molds interchangeable and it really came down to the body type to define her as a Cissy rather than a shorter Binne or Winnie model. My research shows that she is likely from 1957 given the way her wig part is on her hair and the type of stitching combined with her eyelid color as a flesh tone rather than pinker style eyelids from 1958 and later. This is my estimate based on the characteristics I researched as she's not labeled with any year.
Hair: She has dark brown hair with short curled bangs and a curled up 50’s flip pinned in place. Hair is stiff and in pretty pristine condition.
Face: Her original paint is very strong with red lips and rouge cheeks, fine painted eyebrows and lashes. Her eyes are a light green shade.
Body: She’s been cleaned. There aren’t any major markings on her body. I noticed at one elbow it looked more shaded than the other one but very unnoticeable unless you are searching for it.
Clothing: This outfit is not an original Madame Alexander Cissy outfit. There are no tags on it, but it appears to be a professionally made outfit given the linings and stitch work on it. It has aged with the doll, so my assessment is that it is vintage from the 1950's also and was made to dress and play with by it's previous owner. The coat is vibrant turquoise, some slight discoloration on the collar lapel high on the neck, but very minor and near the edges of the hems and sleeve openings, likely from dressing and undressing the doll from play. The dress has pretty good coloring, no rips or tears. There is some discoloration and fading, but it took me a while to pick up on it because the stripes of dots are varying colors of aqua alternating from light to dark so my eyes weren't sure if that patterning was playing a trick or if there were faded stripes. It is clear to me from wrinkling in areas that the dress was washed at some point, not just made and meant for display. The skirt is unlined, but the bodice is lined in off-white fabric. It has a small bow button at the front and an interesting neck line with lapels and neck shaping from that era. The coat has a turquoise velvet swing coat lined in cream satin. Coat is fully lined even through the sleeves. Some stitch marks are visible on the velvet where the satin lining was tacked into place. Her original nylons were damaged so they were replaced with knee high vintage nylons from another doll. Petticoat and underwear were also vintage finds from another doll. The only new items added were the shoes which are a modern made item today and the pearl necklace which I handmade to go with the outfit. Overall I was very excited at her full look when I was done as she looks exactly right for her era. This will be a nice addition for someone looking for a top Cissy look but without the higher price tag of those dolls with original Cissy outfits.
This doll has been inspected and prepared with care to be in optimal/best condition. She will be boxed safely to preserve her condition and travel safely to her new home. She also comes with a metal stand for display.
All Madame Alexander dolls have had their stringing tested to make sure they are in proper working order.
